Masters of Whedonverse Pub Quiz

I'm always looking for fun things to do. So when I saw a Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz based on Joss Whedon lore, I knew I HAD to join the fun! Admit it folks, this is the quiz i was meant to ace!
Last week I made the trek across the causeway to the G Street Wunderbar in Davis. I arrived to the bar without a team - hoping to find one. And find a team I did! These lovely, fellow Sacramentans and Whedon aficionados!

I had to go with the group that had the Jayne hat, right?!

Here's the lowdown from the Geeks Who Drink page:

Scores

yessir Capt tight pants 67
the ambassadors 65
corporate toolst browncoats 35
Team old men 14

Rocked It with Four BITCHES!!!
(FYI, I'm one of the four! ;))
Julia
There is so much that I want to say but I can’t damn’t!! I can’t because then people would know some of the questions to the other quizzes!! Hmmmmmm.. this is what I can say, there were shits of the night and good parts of the night. The shit part was there was four teams that participated, definitely thought there’d be more like ten… maybe fifteen.. But the teams were full of great people with money to use for drinking and it was small but intimate! That would be the good part of the four teams that showed. The other major good that happened tonight was people bringing their A game bitches! And despite the fact there were four teams, it was super close all the way through. We had a new team show up, The Ambassadors an all women group that found out about Whedonverse through FB and decided to show up. They were close up there with our regulars Yessir, Captain Tight Pants all night; neck and neck whole way through! So four-shmore! It was fun. At one point I saw the bartender helping a college student with her chemistry homework.. I feel like that happens only in Davis. You go anyway and someone can help you tackle what a hydrogen covalent bond is and its’ charges. I thought that was super cute. Maybe that’s how bartenders hit on patrons, “I can’t figure out why those Atoms are squared?”, “That’s okay…” says the bartender, “I’ll square your atoms.” Ugh! Bad joke. Sorry 'bout that.

Hella birthday’s tonight too! So happy birthday to the girl at the bar and the guy with the receding hair line! The drunk guy who shouted out an answer in R8 because he was totally annihilated by that point. His team was out of third by three points and he was all, “Dude, we’re soo out of it!” I was like, no you’re not dude! Then he kept running his mouth (ya know, the drunk guy who thinks he’s hella funny but isn’t. Actually more often than not he’s embarrassing) so I said to him, “dude, you cannot hold your liquor at all! You’d be the worst date. You are the epitome of what women can’t do!” that did it. And for five minutes I could finish the rest of the quiz. The quiz! Let’s get to it!

Okay, for those who are reading this wondering what’s gonna be on it, I’m not saying anything. But it’s fair! It’s about as specific as our other quizzes. You’re in for a treat. So The Ambassadors, and Yessir, Captain Tight Pants were close all night, after the first two round The Ambassadors were up by two points. After the second scoring session Yessir, Captain Tight Pants came back and took the lead for a couple of rounds before The Ambassadors took the lead once more. But late in the game Yessir, Captain Tight Pants took the lead by jokering in the final round of the night, Edging them over The Ambassadors by two points!! They ended up taking the loot tonight! Corporate Tools and Browncoats took third also in the eigth round, hanging on by their skinny-skin-skin in all the other rounds then finally jokering late in the game!! It was a ton of fun! You missed out if you didn’t get to come out tonight. I’m not gonna be there next week, but I’ll see you the following week. Have a good night and good luck to everyone else planning on hitting the Joss Whedon Quiz this week!!

My team had been neck and neck with the winners, even ahead for a few rounds...Only to be defeated by TWO measly points in the end! Talk about grrr arrgh! I still feel good about the game though because the winning team had twice the amount of players we had. And in the end I feel pretty secure in my Whedon knowledge! Just keepin' it Shiny!

A Must See: Scraps Premiere Event

Hey folks! Remember my tale of being an "actress" for a day? Yes *nod*, No *shake*, Maybe *furrow brow*...?!? *crickets*

Friday, May 25, 2012, 7-10pm
Tower Theatre - Roseville
417 Vernon Street, Roseville, CA 95678

Doors open at 7pm.

This film is rated PG13 (for profanity and depictions of activities related to a mature theme). Unless your child was involved in the film, it would be best to not bring them.

$5 suggested donation at door. Cast and crew members, and donors are FREE. There will be a guest list at the ticket booth.

Following the screening, we will be holding a reception where we will be serving hors d'oeuvres and beverages, sparkling cider and tap brew.

*Due to the volume of anticipated viewers, and that the theater seats a total of approx. 227 people, it is noted here that priority will be given to cast/crew members and their families.*

Scraps is a short film about Maggie, a tween-aged girl burdened with not knowing where she came from. Her story begins at infancy during her last encounter with her mother, which involves a spontaneous and deranged baptism. Being born again to a string of foster parents, Maggie reminds herself that even though her life seems bleak, it can always be worse. She survives on scraps of kindness from others, but longs for something more. She paints pictures of her real parents in her imagination and prays for the day when mere survival isn’t her primary concern.

Maggie’s life-long desire to know her origin ends when she convinces herself that her mother is Rhonda, the local ranting homeless woman. As she tries to save Rhonda from a life of "tricking-for-treats", she is disillusioned by the status of her mental health and realizes that even if she is her mother, she is no longer capable of mothering.

My Earth Hour

Every once in a while I like to participate in swaps. Most of them are craft related and I make some fun projects... Others are internet related.  I recently came across one that I could not ignore. It was simply PARTICIPATE in EARTH HOUR! So I dutifully researched Earth Hour and signed up for the swap. The message/cause is simple: Unplug yourself for one hour on March 31, 2012 at 8pm (your time) - WORLD WIDE! Here's a video to give you an idea of the Earth Hour mission:

If you're my friend on facebook, you might have seen my posts asking for you to participate with me(*****Earth Hour is THIS SATURDAY 8PM - 9PM!***** Please unplug yourself and enjoy the starlight/moonlight/candlelight! I know living in the city can make this hard, but please just for this ONE HOUR enjoy yourself with the simpleness of the earth!).  Now, I know I'm not always the most earth-cautious person, but I do try to do my part in little ways (i.e. recycling, repurposing, re-using my old envelopes when shipping out orders or swapping). In either case, I unplugged myself for an hour, and this is what I did:

(beautiful screen shot huh? lol!)

My original idea was to go up to Auburn or Placerville and just look at the stars. But since my battery is dead in my car, that idea got nixed! Plus, I figured that taking a drive for Earth Hour would be counter-productive to the the cause since it would put more exhaust emissions into the atmosphere. Then I thought, why not do what I do best? Let's make some jewelry! NOW I know how tricky it is to attach crimp covers by candlelight! o_O It was fun doing what I do, readjusting candle positions as I worked on my projects. It gave me a greater appreciation for daylight and light bulbs. It also gave me a good feeling to unplug along with millions of others across the world!

Getty OWL is Turning TWO!!!!

Happy 2nd Birthday Getty!!!!!

(Copied from Getty's Blog)

Our Babe is Turning 2! Let’s Celebrate With Giveaways!

From Kate:

That is right folks, Getty is turning the BIG 2 on Sunday and to tell you that we are excited beyond belief just doesn’t cut it. We are just so proud to be her parents and to know that we have been able to have 2 full years of memories and milestones has been more than a blessing. she has turned into a little lady before our eyes.

In these past two years, Mark and I have really learned about the human spirit and how much strength a human being has once asked to find it and use it. Getty makes life certainly worth living and a kind of living that is unmeasurable. She wakes up with a smile and falls asleep with a smile. Even on our scariest days, she finds some way to reassure us that it will all be okay and that we need to get over all the feelings of fear, loathing, and sadness.

I think it would be hard for most people to understand this but as our lives have changed so much we forget that Getty has a terminal condition. You can’t get through a day without knowing SMA is there but to allow it to control us would have sure consequences. Getty is here and she is happy and healthy, considering everything and we are just living life. What an incredible lesson she has taught us and continues to teach.

In the past year Getty has seen jelly fish and the pacific ocean, visited her animal friends at the zoo, saw a baseball game at the Sacramento Rivercats, has been hospitalized, changed her diet, got her custom braces, visited a pumpkin patch, was an owl again for Halloween :) , took tons of walks, was introduced to her stander that she is doing awesome with, observed Christmas lights, went ice skating, visited friends and family at the Getty Owl Run/Walk, and moved houses.

She has been busy and our hope is for us (Mark and I) to be really brave this summer and go to all kinds of places to allow her to experience even more of what life has to offer. We couldn’t be more excited.

Last year the “Lady with all the great ideas” Stacey had a terrific event on our blog on the day of Getty’s birthday. It was an all day event where every hour there was a new item up for giveaway. At the end of the day the winners were announced.

It touched me so much because I know that this was her way to celebrate Getty’s big day. Lots of great people donated items. Jewelry, handmade crafts, gift cards, artwork, and we had a Grand Prize item of a $100 iTunes gift card and a Flip camera. This year is going above and beyond from last year. More details to come in the next few days.

So if you interested and would like to help us virtually celebrate Getty’s Birthday, check out all of the giveaways every hour on Sunday. Leave a comment to be in the running to win. We will announce the Grand Prize on Friday, so stay tuned, it is really cool. :)

Stacey will be posting updates this week on the giveaway celebration. We hope you can join us. And I thank all the people in advance for offering to donate items. You make all of this possible. Thank you.

Stay Tuned.

My Love Letter to Malcolm Reynolds

Bao bay,

I saw your face on a wanted poster the other day. It made me think, who is this man that haunts my thoughts? I’ve never even met you; but I can only hope that one day we might have the chance to complicate one another.
Just envisioning you in your tight pants and Brown coat makes me tyen-shaio duh! ~ Shiny!
Let us, you and I, find a moon to ourselves.
Where we can misbehave long into the night…jen mei NAI-shing duh FWO-tzoo!

Sheh-sheh for making this ‘verse a better place!

With Love,
Rain

So yeah, my favorite local comic book shop is doing a love letter to your favorite comic book character (for Valentines Day) & I decided to join in on the fun! There's a lot of borrowed quotes/language from the show (Firefly)/movie (Serenity). Also, all the unintelligible language is suppose to be Cantonese that I got from the (Firefly) Cussifly app. What can I say? "I love my Captain"! :)

Taking another thought about who I might have written a love letter to, I could have easily written one to Xander or Spike! (My other great comic book loves/lusts!) :D But I figured that writing one to Mal might give me greater odds for winning the contest since the guys at Empire are big Firefly fans. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I win free comics!

just for fun....

My Love Letter for Alexander "Xander" LaVelle Harris

Dear Xander,

My insides do a Snoopy dance every time I see you! I go into fits of nonverbal-ness in your presence! I would be willing to break my diet just to stuff Twinkies in my mouth with you. I would hide out with you until danger goes away! (Preferably someplace cozy enough for snuggles!) I would sing (off key) with you while wearing my nightie while we eat breakfast. And most importantly, even though you don't have any "supernatural" powers, you are the strongest link in the "Scooby" gang because of your immeasurable amount of heart! And I will love that heart with all of mine until the end of time...or until the next Apocalypse kills us!

Always,
Rain

P.S. You make eye patches look sexy!

My Love Letter to William "the Bloody" aka Spike

Hello Cutie!

I still remember that evening so vividly. You put your arm around me and held me close. I could feel your coldness and your warmth all at the same time. I felt like I was in inch from death in your arms....... (and....the rest of this letter is going into the direction of being alll too descriptive of the thoughts in my head at this moment. So I will just stop there! lol!)

XO,
Rain

Have a good night folks! I hope it was a good Valentines Day! <3
