I (HEART) The Guild!

I must confess, I'm a GEEK! (If you didn't already know this, now you do!) I'm sure you've noticed my fair share of blogging about Buffy or Joss Whedon , but I've barely talked about The Guild! It's basically a show (web series) centered around Syd/Codex and her "friends" who love to play a online role-playing game (think World of Warcraft) and how they interact with each other in game and real life. You can catch episodes on their website, YouTube or Netflix...I suggest you do! :)

I've felt pretty crafty towards The Guild recently and made myself a couple items in honor of my favorite web series!

Please allow me to rewind for a quick second....

I <3 The Guild sooo much that I went to the Long Beach Comic Con back in April just to catch a glimpse of them taping Season 5!

I'll admit, I was stalking the set!

Getting back on track... A couple seasons ago Zaboo had this Highland Sextacy painting done for Codex to show how much he supported her "relationship" with Fawkes (leader of the rival guild). Think Geek actually started selling Team Codex-Fawkes (Team Cawkes >:) ) posters! I subsequently emailed Think Geek to see if they would be selling t-shirts with the print. Sadly, they responded no because it would be too hard to print the dark picture, resolution, etc..

Then I thought: "Hey, I've made my own 'screen printed' shirts before! I can totally do a Team Cawkes shirt myself!". A trip to the fabric store to buy a tee and dark transfer paper and I was ready to get to business. I just downloaded the image, printed it out on the transfer paper, ironed it on the tee, altered the tee to fit me better & voila!

But I didn't stop there - because dude, I need jewelry to go with the shirt! "I can make shrinky dink charms out of The Guild icons and make a charm bracelet!" As it turned out, my shrinky dink charms came out a tad bit too large..."Necklace it is!".

Here's how I did it:

(Disclaimer: ALL images are property of The Guild (Felicia Day, et al)! I made the shirt and the necklace just for myself! I do not intend to sell them!)

Downloaded the icons and printed them out on shrink paper.

Then I cut them out, punched charm holes and laid them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet to bake/shrink at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes.

They went from really BIG

(a little more than a quarter of a regular sheet of paper)

to big charm size (about 2 inches) :

To keep the ink from running (from either getting wet or sweat) I decided to put a clear coat on each charm. I started by using nail polish (since I couldn't find my Diamond Glaze) and found out that it was a bad idea.

If you look closely, you'll notice that something funny started to happen to the Clara (blue) charm when I applied the nail polish. The ink wanted to run - yikes! So I sprayed a clear coat of Krylon on the charms. As it turned out, that wasn't the wisest choice either because it made the ink spotty. I ultimately decided that I didn't buy the proper shrink paper because the ink did not want to fully dry!

Though, I must make another confession: I hate waiting for things to set! Whether it be glue, paint, nail polish, ink, whatever - I get impatient! I want to get to the next step! Which I have found never really helps any project. I just get so excited that I want to get to the finished product! I'm sure many of you other artists/crafters have been in this situation before as well! Come on, 'fess up!

I'm sure if I had waited overnight for the printer ink to dry on the shrink paper then tried to bake/shrink the charms I would have had much more positive results!

Anyway, I soldiered on!

I did end up applying a coat of the nail polish to the charms to make them glittery. ;)

I wire worked the charms onto a white enameled chain and added a lobster claw clasp.

Then I laid out different colored Czech glass heart and star beads to see how I wanted the remainder of the necklace to look. Then I put all the beads on head pins and wire worked them on the chain. I omitted some beads and added others and this is what I ended up making:

There's me & my finished product! I couldn't be a happier jeweler/geek!

All I need now is some Jones soda featuring The Guild while I watch the webisodes! (BIG thumbs up!)

Sunshine Tutu

I made a Sunshine Tutu for my niece (girlfriend's daughter) for Halloween!

Here's how I did it:

1. First cut out 3-4 different colored pieces of tulle in varying shades of orange & yellow. I cut 8 pieces of each tulle...two shades of yellow & two shades of orange = 24 triangles.

2. Do a zig-zag edge stitch along two sides of your triangles with matching thread.

You should get a nice pile of edged pieces

3. Get a piece of ribbon and straight stitch your triangles onto it. You'll want to cut the ribbon to twice the length of the waist measurement.

Stagger your pieces along the ribbon so they lay unevenly.

Lay orange on top of yellow...yellow on top of orange to create depth .

4. Trim any tulle points that might sick out along the top edge of your ribbon.

5. Get a thicker piece (at least twice as wide as the base ribbon) of ribbon and fold it evenly over the front & back of the base ribbon.

You can't really tell from the top picture, but I took my long ends of ribbon & tied them in a bow in the back of my niece. Pretty easy project!

Halloween Costume '11

I always dream BIG for Halloween because it's my favorite holiday!

After much debate I decided to do something Tim Burton-esque! After going to his art exhibit earlier this year I've just felt so inspired by his art. In preparing my costume I scoured the web for ideas and created this Etsy Treasury:

This is how my costume turned out:

Not exactly what I originally envisioned...actually I wanted something a bit more kick a$$ (like with a corset & skirt), but this worked for passing out candy to Trick-or-Treaters!

My mom made the AWESOME black & white striped jacket that I'm totally in LOVE with <3!!! It turned out so great that I even wore it to the Dia de los Muertos Celebration I vended at the weekend before. (Pictures below)

I originally wanted to construct a top hat to go with the awesome jacket, but I went with this psychedelic witch hat I got at Gatherings. To complete the ensemble I wore my red & white stockings I picked up at the Heebe Jeebe Halloween boutique!

Rob on the Road with Spanglish Arte!

Scraps! "An actress tale..."

My friend, Melody, wrote a script for a short film, Scraps. She asked me to be an "extra" for their shooting of the laundromat scene. So I happily accepted my part as an "extra"! Little did I know that I would have to actually act! Yeah! :)

Here I am post makeup (done by my sis, Angel):

Before that day Melody and I discussed what I should wear that day. Both of us being Dr. Horrible fans, she sent me this picture on my Facebook page:

I told her that I would have to see what I had in my closet. I decided on my "naughty maidens" (fabric I got from reprodepot.com a few years back. If you look close you can see sassy maidens showing a little leg in their dresses. My mom made the dress!) dress because it had all the colors of Penny's outfit in it. It would have been great if I had my little cap sleeve white cardigan, but guess what? It was in the laundry! lol! And seeing as I was up the night before at the Midtown Vampire Pub Crawl (hence the sleepy eyes in my previous picture), I didn't get any laundry done!

The director gave me my direction and I happily, or normally, folded my laundry... I put clothes into the washer... and then I found out I really had to act! I'm not going to give the scene away, because you will ALL have to see the movie, but here I am waiting to do my part:

I just have to laugh because I do not look thrilled at all in this picture! I felt bad because as previously mentioned, I was prepared to fold my laundry in the background and call it a day. Then I find out I had to do this "acting" which I was not at all prepared to do! Ah well, it was fun! And now I can officially say that I'm in a movie! :) *giggle* I met a lot of fun people on set which made for a good time talking about movies & Whedonesque things between takes! Thank you Melody for making me a part of your movie!

In Mexico, neighbors gather in local graveyards to share food, music and fun with their families and extended community, both living and departed. This most personal of all Mexican holidays, Dia de los Muertos has become an international phenomenon in recent years, and acknowledges the belief that death is only another phase of life from which we both shrink from and celebrate.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

I'm always happy whenever October rolls around because this spooktacular month features my very favorite holiday, Halloween! :[ (<---That's my happy vampire smilie)

You get to dress up in a costume, which let's face it, is probably one my absolute favorite things to do! When I was younger, and old enough to be left alone, I would always rummage through my mom & sister's closets to try on dresses & high heels! I start dreaming up costumes waaay in advance then narrow down my list to what I really wanted to be! Most Halloweens my mom makes my costume. Occasionally I sew a little myself or I augment some outfit with the proper accessories to go with it!

You also have tons of fun craft projects to create! I got a head start this year (because my jewelry is in a couple boutiques for the season) and made a bunch of earrings & necklaces.

Today I carved a pumpkin & baked the seeds for a treat!

Curtis Fest - Wrap Up

Like most shows I do, I stayed up really late finishing projects just to wake up really early to trot out to the show & set up my goodies to sell! Which is why you won't see any pictures of me because I looked like a zombie until I ran to Starbucks to get a large mocha & then I was just hot & sweaty (because it was hot outside) once I was alert ...and you probably don't really care, so on to the pictures! lol!

The Art of Tim Burton

Back in June, I had gone down to LA for the Can't Stop the Serenity charity event (which you can read about me in all my geekdome here). The day after I took a trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to see the Tim Burton Exhibit!

If you're a "kid" around my age, you fell in love with Beetle Juice and The Nightmare Before Christmas! The awe & mystery of Edward Scissorhands and many many more! Now imagine if you would, walking into the creative world of the artist that made these wonderful films possible! I got to do just that!

This was my portal into that world:

I walked around in childish delight taking it all in from scultpures to statues, paintings, movie props, costumes and videos. It was all eye candy and nourishment for my soul!

The colors and textures of everything. Endless hours of love, neurosis, art and ambition from his early days at Disney to his work of today. It was all there on display and I drank it ALL in!

The walls were covered in pages of notebook sketches & water color doodles.

Even the simplicity of this sketch & poem has depth with the use of watercolors! Not to mention that the poem is pretty kick a$$!

This piece stole my heart!

I could envision a young Edward cutting out cookie dough with his cutter feet & his father holding up his heart! The magic that cinema is brought to life!

In the center of the exhibit, you walk through this black curtain.

Danny Elfman nightmaresque music is playing.

The entire room is dark - lit up with a black light.

Creatures are crawling on the black walls in bright black light paint and this awesome carousel is sitting in the center of the room.

Electrified & revolving!

Off in the corner of this room is a replica of "Oogie Boogie"!

After a short millenia of being captured by the awesomeness of the black light room, I move on to a room full of a hundred little Jack Skellington heads in plexy glass on one wall and the rest of the cast of Nightmare on the other! I decided that this was the time that I put my headphones in my ear & start up my ipod with the Nightmare Revisited soundtrack...Marilyn Manson's version of "This is Halloween" delightfully playing in my ears.

I walked from section to section looking at Colleen Atwood costumes in intensity! Catwoman, Edward Scissorhands & a huge pumpkinhead cape from Sleepy Hallow! Numerous other stop-motion animated characters and movie memorabilia. There was just sooo much in this one place!

I enjoyed watching this short called Vincent.

My tour ended here:

Flooded back by the light of day and ushered into the most evil little museum gift shop ever! - Well, a close second to my trip to the SF MOMA to see the Frida Khalo exhibit & gift shop! (but that's a story for another day!)

I ended up buying a sticker pack containing the Pin Cushion Queen & Oyster Boy! I still have yet to make anything with them. I'll make a post once I do. :)

All I can say is Tim Burton is an awe-inspiring artist! If you have a chance to see the exhibit, please, PLEASE do! You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't! LA traffic is worth the experience to see his art up-close!!!

Chalk It Up Sacramento

Expanding Business!

After Dark

Something Old

I picked up this old flashlight last year at an antique fair in Placerville while I was hunting for things to go with my Steampunk costume. It's actually produced by Winchester (looks a lot like this 1930s model)! Since it was missing it's internal mechanics, I added a watch face with a few sprockets & cogs from other older pieces along with some leather & lacing...and voila! I have a cool old piece for my costuming!
